Kochoran Mittens - Knitting Pattern

Kochoran Mittens
by Katie Himmelberg
Fall 2008

Mittens that are a little more interesting than your standard guy fare (more charcoal gray yarn, anyone?) that still appeal to those slightly wary about handknits. The chunky yarn works up quickly, and the subtle colorway is broken up by alternating each round with opposite ends of the skein. One skein plus a quick knit equals a great gift project.

Motley Mitts - Knitting Pattern

Motley Mitts
by Lisa Shroyer
Fall 2008

A chunky two-ply with very short color runs is worked in rows in stockinette. The fabric is shaped into a subtle hourglass with short-rows. This hourglass folds over the hand and wrist and is seamed up one side, creating a tailored fit. The short-rows are very basic and easy to follow in this pattern—a good project for practicing this shaping technique.

Paired with a dark solid, a bright variegated yarn and a woven-look slip-stitch pattern gussy up some truly simple knitting: There are only two pattern rows and no hand shaping. Snowball fights, here I come.

“I treasure the magazine—my copies show the wear and tear of my handling them over and over (even your advertisements are colorful and informative.) I have improved my knitting skills by making many patterns you publish that are irresistible, and I have been inspired to depart from old knitting habits by the creativity of your knitters.”
